Toucan Nest

Local Attractions

The surfing in the Dominical area is second to none in Costa Rica. From the big waves on Playa Dominical to the easy riding waves of Playa Ventanas, there is something for surfers of all levels. Costa Paraiso sits on the north end of Playa Dominicalito which has easy to ride waves and a point break when conditions are right. This is the favored beach of the local surf instructors.

The rocky outcroppings directly in front on Costa Paraiso have some of the best fishing around and just a few steps from our property you can arrange for in-shore fishing tours by boat as well.

Osa Canopy Tour
Probably the best zipline tour in the area is located near the town of Ciudad Cortez, about 35 mins from Costa Paraiso. 11 lines in all and a Tarzan swing to finish the trip. Fruit and refreshments are provided after the tour. They also offer a waterfall repelling tour here as well.

Don Lulo's Nauyaca Falls Horseback Tour
This fantastic tour takes you to the breathtaking Nauyaca Falls on horseback. Starting at 8:00 AM, you trek through the jungle on horseback for 45 minutes to Don Lulo's home for breakfast and photo ops with tame toucans and macaws. Following that is a half-hour trip by horse to the Nauyaca Falls, where you can swim in the pools or jump from the falls. Upon returning to Don Lulo's home, you are served an excellent lunch, then led back to the starting point.

Hacienda Baru
Hacienda Baru is a wildlife refuge offering three tours. The Flight of the Toucan is a zipline tour consisting of 8 ziplines that carry you from tree to tree across canopy and canyon floors.

Cano Island
Caño Island is situated 20 kilometers off the Osa peninsula. The island offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in Costa Rica. Skin Diver magazine has rated the site as among the best in the world and one of the newest hot spots for adventure diving. The rock formations are volcanic origins; sea fans, cup coral, head corals are the most common. Marine life consists of sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, stingrays, morays, and huge snapper and grouper. There are a variety of tour companies offering tours to Cano Island, most of them are day-long excursions.

Local Surf Schools
Dominical is renowned as one of Costa Rica's premier surfing destinations. As you might expect, there are a variety of surf schools in the area that cater to surfers of all experience levels. Gato Surf Camp is a great choice.

Rancho La Merced
Covering an area of 506 hectares of primary rainforest, mangroves and beach, Rancho La Merced wildlife refuge offers a variety of environments to explore and wildlife to see. Horseback riding and hiking excursions are available.

One of the area's best kept secrets, Mistura is a waterfall and swimming hole right out of an Indiana Jones movie, where you can swing from a rope into a deep pool, or (for the more adventurous) try out the tico waterslide!

Poza Azul
Another charming waterfall with a rope swing, within walking distance.

The South Pacific Zone's only reptile and amphibian park. Observe these magnificent animals in lush, natural settings. Learn to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes, marvel at poison dart frogs, delight in rainforest lizards and tortoises and be impressed by prehistoric-looking crocodilians all in secure enclosures. A great way to spend an afternoon with the kids.

Running on Playa Dominicalito
Dedicated runners say that Dominicalito is a great beach to run on, because of its flatness and hard sand.
